your book is your business

Monday, September 29th, 2008

“And then what?” I find myself asking that question a lot lately as entrepreneurs and speakers approach me about getting a book done. We usually get to a point in the conversation where I ask the person what they want to happen after they get published. They’ll often say something like, “I really just want to get the book out there.” Okay, we can do that, I say. “And then what?” I ask the question because these days, especially where a business is concerned, you’re leaving a lot of opportunity

3 things you should know to write your phd dissertation

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Writing a PhD dissertation is an extremely lengthy task. It requires and demands originality. You must discuss a problem which was not investigated earlier and therefore should be unique. In this article, I am going to discuss three common things that students should know when they start writing their dissertations. PhD Dissertation Related to Master’s Dissertation? Your PhD dissertation doesn’t have to be related to your Master’s dissertation at all. If you have written your dissertation on a particular topic in your Master’s program and would like to choose a completely different topic for your PhD dissertation then you may do that. It’s not a problem at all. You should actually aim to choose a different topic for your PhD dissertation because when you start your PhD and get ready to write your dissertation, you might not be interested in your Master’s dissertation topic. However your Master’s dissertation can be a starting point for your PhD dissertation but it is a significantly different and focused work which demands originality and uniqueness. Dissertation Topic: Write your PhD dissertation on a topic that you find interesting and in which you want to become an expert. Then try to slowly narrow it down. If there is a particular topic that can make you scream with happiness whenever it’s discussed, go for it. Also, choose a topic that will give you an edge when you are ready to apply for a job. Do consider the job market. So, talk to your advisor and professors about it. It Should Take As Long As It Should: There is no hard and fast rule that you should finish your PhD dissertation in 4 years or 5 years. However, some universities might ask to finish your degree within 8 years. If you are dedicated and focused then you should be able to finish writing it in 12 months. But if you are required to observe something for 2, 3 years or more then of course you can’t finish it in a year. Remember, you can’t afford to sacrifice the quality of your dissertation just to complete it early. If you have a definite plan and you stick to it then you will finish your dissertation much earlier than you think. Your PhD dissertation has to be new and should be about something never researched before. It is not an easy task but it’s not impossible either. Stay away from copy-pasting and stay in touch with your advisor and professors. Make a plan and stick to it, you will be done before you know it!! reading skills

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

It has been said that readers are leaders. You can certainly dispute that, but it is a well-known fact. Having a reading attitude is an integral part of being successful. Reading has always been the cornerstone of my learning. The first time a book was read to me in grade school, I could not wait until I was able to read books myself. There were two main reasons why I wanted to learn how to read. When I was being read to, there was an emotional and mental entanglement for me. Let me explain what I mean. As I began to listen to the story about the three bears, I was instantly whisked away to a place in my mind (my imagination) where I became a character in the story. I felt the same feelings that the bears felt… When they felt hungry, I felt hungry. When they felt tired, I felt tired. And when they became surprised, I became surprised. The descriptive words and imagery used in the story made the story lifelike. Listening to the story was like being in a dreamlike state as in a daydream. Another thing that makes me want to read was the expectancy and curiosity factor in reading. No one likes being left to dry when listening to an interesting story. What I mean is that we want to get to the end of the story. When something stops the reading causes an expectancy or unfulfilled desire in the listener. For me two things raise these kinds feelings; an unanticipated interruption or a multi-part story. The best examples are commercials and soap operas, the bad thing of those is that they are multi-part. Soap operas are unending stories and have a dissonant air about them; they make me feel unsatisfied when the last scene for the day ends. The second most meaningful thing that made me want to read was being able to increase my knowledge of things. The day I got my first library card was the most liberating because books and stories increased my knowledge. I knew that having access to books would afford me the freedom to experience the feelings I felt when I was being read to. With the difference being that I can now read what and when I want. Books are knowledge banks and I yearn for business education. One time when I was in middle school I took a class to increase my reading speed and comprehension. It was the best move I could have ever made. Not only did I increase my comprehension and reading speed, my overall grades went up. In my freshman year in collage my philosophy professor gave us a required reading list. As I remember there were more than 16 books. I had never had to read that many books. So I went to work reading the books one by one. I eventually read them all, but little did I know that there was a better way to accomplish that task. Only after many years one of my business tutors told me the trick to being able to read many books at once and making money online in business. When I found out how simple it was, it made me feel really stupid. My tutor explained it to me and I never forgot what they said. They said that your brain is adaptable and when you force-feed it information, the brain remembers what you were able to do before. So, the next time you force-feed you brain even more information, your brain remembers that too. To make a long story short, to read and understand what you read, all you need to do is to increase the number of books you want to read and continually increase that number over time. Right now I can read more than eight books at a time and comprehend much of what I read. The trick is to slowly train your brain. A reading attitude is essential to learning. but what if i cant write articles

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Article marketing is a great way to make money, promote you website, generate traffic, and improve your website rankings. If you are not using articles to promote your online business, you should be. The benefits are just too great to pass up. But not everyone is blessed with the ability to write articles. What do you do if article writing is not your strong point? If you don’t have good writing or language skills, you can still get the benefits of article marketing. There are many options open to you. The first thing that comes to mind is the use of a ghostwriting service. By doing a search for ghostwriters, you will find many online businesses that cater to your needs. The large established companies like Elance typically charge more for individual articles. But smaller companies that are looking to break into the article business may give you a more reasonable price. In this market, using smaller companies, expect to pay between five dollars and ten dollars per article. However, if you are looking for article alternatives that are cheaper still, you have an option. Visit the large forums; I use The Warrior Forum and Digital Point. These forums usually contain postings from people who are just starting their article business. If you don’t find any postings like this, enter your own posting. Indicate that you are looking to pay someone to write articles. Don’t mention a price that you are willing to pay in your posting. Ask interested parties to send you a private message. Using this method, you can expect to pay three to five dollars for articles. However, you should keep in mind that your writer will probably have little experience. In fact, you may be the first customer. But everyone has to start out somewhere. And if you are happy with the quality of the work, who cares how much experience your newly discovered writer has. how to write a respectful and insightful eulogy for a grandfather

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

When writing a eulogy for a grandfather it can be very difficult to find the right words. A eulogy, in essence, is very different from other types of writing. You can’t grab a bunch of words out of thin air, or worse yet, wing it, calling it inspirational. Even the most accomplished writers can find that writing a eulogy is truly a challenge. This challenge is often due to the personal connections that an individual can have ? in this instance those close feelings one would have for a grandfather. Nonetheless, it is still true that the best person to write a eulogy would be someone close to the deceased. You may feel an exceptional amount of pressure attempting to create the insightful and respectful eulogy for your grandfather. You have to do it right as a form of respect for your grandfather. Yet, in the same sense, you want to show the insight you had regarding his life and his ways. While respect should be the central theme of your eulogy, you?ll want to also include as a sub theme the insights you and he shared. When you consider the words to use, the tone to adopt, and other details of the eulogy, always keep respect in mind. Here are some examples. Give a few examples of the dignity your grandfather displayed when he was alive. Even at difficult times, he had managed to choose the highest path and retain his dignity. Then weave in a point of insight, for example, how your grandfather shared with you his code of values and urged you to adopt these for yourself. For instance, perhaps your grandfather had been having health difficulties, yet he still managed to keep his promise to his grandchild - by still taking his grandson camping as promised. Obviously, this is just one example. There would be numerous examples that one could have used in a eulogy for a grandfather. Any example that will illustrate a grandfather’s dignity will serve you well. The tone of the speech when writing an eulogy for a grandfather is a key element to helping to bring across your respect and the insightfulness that you and your grandfather shared. In this instance, the concept is that you are delivering this speech at an occasion where the mood is solemn and somber, and though normally, one would try to convey a humorous story about the deceased to help with the overwhelming emotions, in this instance you would not. Therefore, avoid using any form of humor in your eulogy. Also, use words like remember him as, see him as or memory. Everyone in the audience knows your grandfather in some way. They are there at the memorial service to pay their last respects and hopefully leave with some fond memories of your grandfather. Share with them those memories you have that show his dignity, and show the insightfulness he had toward life, as well as the insightfulness you two shared with each other. Let them leave the service with nice memories about your grandfather. In summary, the majority of your work for the eulogy is done once you have identified those interesting stories about your grandfather. The next half of the battle, is all about getting those stories into words on the page and making sure they flow for a nice eulogy speech. How to express these stories in the proper tone is just as important. Don?t allow a story that is respectful to turn out as funny. To avoid these mistakes, download as many eulogy samples as you can for reference ? there are some very nice eulogies for a grandfather to review. You will find that you get very good ideas and language that will help you in developing your eulogy. Margaret Marquisi is a retired novelist and fulltime grandmother. time to get focused and how to do it

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

By now you’ve probably read at least a dozen articles about setting goals and achieving New Year’s resolutions. But you probably didn’t read–because most articles fail to mention it–about what specific steps you’ll need to take to achieve what you want to do. Well, I can’t tell you about how to lose 20 pounds or how to save for that trip to Tuscany. But I can give you some things to think about to help you achieve your goal of finishing a book this year. Let’s get one thing out of the way first: of course you have to do the work of getting your ideas down on paper. But, really, it’s the things you do before you write that will ensure you finish. Here I’m going to give you 4 Major Focus Points to consider as you move forward with your book project. I want you to write down each one and work on your responses in the coming weeks. Each point is connected either directly or indirectly to your finishing your book. My hope is that you’ll do the work and thinking required and that this will provide the spark you need to get you published in 2009. Focus Point #1: The Magic of Purpose You may already know that I just finished another book that I’ll launch next month. It’s called Doing Business By the Book. Finishing this book and getting it published was a big goal I had for 2008 and I accomplished it. Now, what you don’t know is that I just finished another major project. It’s something that I did not plan. It was nowhere on my radar for 2008 and yet I completed a first draft of this project in less than 3 months. When I’m writing like that, I find it useful to watch myself, to watch my habits to see and feel why this is different from any other project I might have procrastinated on forever and ever. This project is not connected to my business. It’s a totally creative notion that has been percolating for some time and I guess it was ready because the thing just started playing in my head and I couldn’t stop it. I have no idea what I’m going to do with this work when it’s done. I just know it’s great and I know my life will be different for my having written it. Now, my question for you here is “Do you have this kind of feeling behind the book you’re working on now?” This may sound kind of “woo-woo” but I put this focus point first to impress on you how important it is. The aspiring authors I know who are the most successful have a singularity of mind that goes beyond just wanting to write a book for their business or writing a book to make money. They want to write a book because they have something they want to say, a message to communicate to the world. I find that inspiring, so much so that I named my new imprint after that kind of spirit: Messenger House. I was recently reminded of a quote from speaker Jim Rohn who says, “When you understand the ‘why’, the ‘how’ becomes so much easier.” In other words, if you can tap into your passion for why you want to write your book, you’ll move mountains to find the time and resources to get it done. So ask yourself. “Do I have this kind of feeling for my work and if not, how can I get it?” Focus Point #2: Choosing the Right Path for Your Book’s Success This is all about figuring out if you have the right plan in place for your book. If you understand what you’re going to do with your book, it’s another motivating factor to help you finish. I’ve heard a lot about what writers have to say about the publishing process-and many are disappointed. Usually it’s because they had certain expectations that were not met. Whether they knew it or not, there was no way those expectations were going to be met because of the way they chose to have their books published. The way to avoid such disappointment is to be clear about what you want and to make sure you’re pursuing an avenue, whether it be self-publishing or traditional publishing, that will get those needs met. To get clear about your desired outcome, it’s best to create a publishing plan for yourself. To do that, you ask yourself a series of questions so you can get a concrete picture of what you want. Make sure you write down your answers! You’ll find the whole process will be easier when you have a plan-it’ll help you make decisions when problems or opportunities arise. Then you can tell others a different kind of story: how the publishing process was exciting and enjoyable-and not disappointing-for you. Focus Point #3: Organize Your Book Are you writing in a void? In other words, are you writing without an outline? Some writers can do that, they can just sit down with a general idea of their book and go where the thought takes them that day. You can do that with fiction. You can almost never do that with non-fiction. When I meet aspiring authors who can’t speak about their book coherently, it’s because they haven’t done the work of figuring out, chapter-by-chapter, what’s going to be in the book. Sometimes it makes the book easier than you realize. I recently had a consultation with an aspiring author who had been wanting to write a book on a particular subject for a long time but he couldn’t wrap his brains around the book. He said he knew he could help people, that he had X number of ways to help them develop personally. I asked if this was a specific program he had created. He said yes. I asked him how many steps were involved. He said 9. I said “Let’s say you have an introductory chapter and then devote a chapter to each of the 9 steps, and then maybe a concluding chapter with a call to action. Can you do that? 11 Chapters?” He said yes. It can change, his book doesn’t have to be that way, but even this quick idea of an outline did get him started. It doesn’t have to be any harder than that. Focus Point #4: What Do You Need? Ask yourself this and respond honestly. Sometimes we fly by the seat of our pants beating ourselves up over what we didn’t get done each day without asking, “How can it be different? What do I need to help make it different?” You might need a space to write or a research-related trip or a babysitter to give you time to write. If you’re not moving forward on your book, sit down and assess what you do need to finish. Is it a week off from work? Is it a working computer? Is it a coach? Ask yourself this question often because many times you’ll forget and get stuck. I still have to remind myself to ask my family for time when I need to finish a project. Now is the Time Where will you be with your book project in 12 months? Once you’ve done this kind of focused thinking you will know. All you have to do is follow your plan through to completion. © 2009 Sophfronia Scott WANT TO USE THIS ARTICLE IN YOUR E-ZINE OR WEB SITE? which software is best when you want to rewrite your articles

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I have spent the last 2 weeks examining the many different softwares out there that will rewrite your articles so that each site you submit to will have an article that is completely unique. Back a few years ago their was a lot of software that would rewrite your articles and then create all these Adsense sites for you. The problem being with this is that most of the rewritten articles were not readable at all by humans, only machines would see the keywords that were placed throughout the article and that’s pretty much all they were concerned about. After my 2 weeks of trial and error I have created a great comparison of the current software that is out there and there are pros and cons with everything that is out there. The idea about being able to submit a unique article to the many different article directories that are on the web is great but is there any way to truly do this that does not cost us a lot of time? Most of the software that is out there will take 5 articles that each have 10 paragraphs and rearrange the paragraphs so that they are each different from one another. The problem here is that most of us have a hard enough time just writing one article much less at creating 5 articles on the exact same subject material. The other software that is out there today will take an article and use synonyms to replace certain words in the articles. What you need to do with this software is always submit your articles manually so that you can proof read every article before it is submitted. You will need to place certain words in quotes so that they do not get replaced with a synonym. For example I had one article about MySpace and one of the terms was Whore Train which people look for on MySpace but if you let this get replaced then you will end up getting something like slut vehicle and on MySpace people are not looking for anything called a slut vehicle. The later method may be less work than the first method because all you have to do is reread your articles before you have the software reword the article. Putting quotes around the words you do not want to have replaced. Doing this with one article can be a lot less time consuming than trying to write five articles on the same subject but to have each article be different. With the first method if all your paragraphs are complete paragraphs and not run ons then you will not have to proof read any of them before they are submitted. I was in such a hurry the first time I went through the software that does this that I learned a lot of things that should have been done first. Mistakes are made to learn from right? Using the MySpace example I could write an article where each paragraph is a different feature of the site MySpace. This way if the paragraphs are rearranged they will not be garbage content just as long as each feature in all 5 articles are in the same order. Make sure you are not strapped for time if you use software that rearranges paragraphs because it will take considerable time to write 5 articles with each paragraph on the same subject but each one completely different. One of the better options that I did find was by creating a text file with maybe ten different titles for each article and having about 20 different author bio files created and then having the article submitter pick both a title and a bio at random. I will be spending at least another week seeing if I can somehow tweak the output of these software solutions and I am thinking about possible having a programmer create an all in one solution where I could offer the complete software to new authors for maybe $10 of $15 per month. your write to deduct

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Being an aspiring and even a published author is not nearly as lucrative as you had hoped. It takes time and investment, mostly yours, to build a fan base and promote your name and your work. While you are busy planning, promoting and writing, you may have overlooked one very important money making opportunity. Every year, people throw millions away because they just don’t know any better. And who are they paying? Uncle Sam. That’s right, knowing the tax rules and how to take advantage them can save you a bundle of money. And that is money that you can re-invest to jump start that writing career of yours! What should you be doing to save everything possible each year related to your writing activities? I’m glad you asked. Business or hobby Is your writing a business or a hobby? That is the first question that you need to answer. If you are like many people who are aspiring to write for a living, you have a full-time or part-time job that must be maintained until the money begins to roll in from writing. Your writing activities produce little income, but the expense side of the ledger is often full of entries. The result is that your writing activities are costing you money, sometimes lots of money. Is there any way to make that red ink work for you? There certainly is, and here’s the key: If you are actively pursuing your writing as a business and expect (eventually) to make a profit, then the net of all that red ink can be used to reduce the money that you earn from your day job. For example, if you earn $40,000 from your “regular” job and you spend a net of $3,000 promoting and pursuing your writing activities, then you would be able to net the two amounts and pay taxes on only $37,000. In effect, you can fund your writing activities with before-tax dollars, reducing your overall tax bill to Uncle Sam. You don’t need to itemize your deductions to take advantage of this opportunity. This reduces your income before you get to your itemized deductions. The key is that you are engaging in a business with the intent to make a profit. Actually making a profit is not required. If you are writing on a more casual basis, for enjoyment and fulfillment, and you do not expect to earn a profit, the IRS will view your writing activities as a hobby. In that case the losses that you suffer from your writing activities (the net red ink) can not be deducted against other items on your tax return. Business expenses are deductible against other income you make, hobby costs are deductible only to the extent of the income you make from the activity. So, you know that you are pursuing your writing dream with every intention that one day you will be a successful and money-making author. How do you show the IRS? My next article will focus on ways to distinguish between carrying on a business and pursuing a hobby. eWritingToday.com

where to find cheap content writers and other freelance writing professionals on the internet

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Where to Find Cheap Content Writers and Other Freelance Writing Professionals on the Internet The fact that “Content is King” is an old story. What matters to most people now, is where to find the best content at the cheapest price. Content can be anything from a written article, a blog post, a newsworthy piece or even a resume written by a resume writer. Whatever it is that you want written, you want it written professionally and at a fair price as well. If you’re like most people who don’t have the skill required to write professionally or who lack the time to do so, any help in getting a cheap content writer would be duly appreciated. Finding cheap writers is one thing but finding cheap writers who are good is another thing entirely. Most professional writers will charge you a king’s ransom for every single sentence that they put down. Some people choose to search in Internet marketing forums to find ghost writers, technical writers and other types of freelance writers but most writers that you find here supply plagiarized content and there is no way of ensuring that you get your money’s worth in the end. Some writers own their own websites but these writers are expensive because they factor in their marketing, advertising, hosting and entire operational costs when they calculate your final fee. In recent times, one means of sourcing great content writers at a cheap price has been through freelance sites. Freelance websites connect buyers willing to purchase services with sellers who can provide these services. Many of such freelance websites exist and charge only a minimal commission on the price of the project and you to get quality bids from some of the best freelance talent available. The problem with most of these websites is that they tend to cater to mostly programming and design related tasks and writing related services are often offered as a sub-category. Because of this there are many lacking aspects in the provisions of such websites towards people who require the services of a freelance writer. ArticleScripter.com is one freelance writer website that was exclusively created to meet the needs of freelance writers and those who require their services. The website employs the same means used in other freelance websites to connect buyers and sellers but provides all the benefits lacking in these other websites. Buyers get quality at great rates and can fund their accounts with either PayPal or credit cards. The quality of work on these websites is also moderated for greater quality assurance. Writers on the other hand gain access to a wider crowd of clients looking exclusively for writers and the services they provide. Both parties enjoy free escrow services and a number of other benefits too. One of these benefits is the fact that the site is free to join and only requires a minimal commission of $5 for each project. A number of websites have been established to try and achieve the same objectives that ArticleScripter.com currently provides but at the moment the services being rendered are satisfying the needs of both clients and their writers to a great extent, providing a source of quality writing and a steady stream of customers for both parties respectively. Lalaine Cap started freelance writing since 1999. She has written hundreds of articles for American and European clients, and have received excellent feedback for her creative writing skills, high-quality and well-researched work.
