newbies guide to generate profitable niche product ideas

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Generally, Newbies are told many times that they should create a product according to their expertise or according to their favorite past time. However, to be a successful publisher, it is not about I, ME and MYSELF. In fact, it has nothing to do with what you like, what you know or where your expertise lies. It is about creating a product to meet the demands of a niche market. Of course, if your skills or knowledge is in fact in demand, then it is a double bonus, as you can do what you are passionate about and make a nice profit from it. This article is about some great ways to generate niche ideas. At this stage, it is important that you do not self-edit nor self-censor your ideas. Snuff out the little voice in you that shouts,”No! This can’t work!” or “This is a crazy idea, no one will buy my product!” There is no such thing as a stupid or crazy idea. Your ‘crazy’ idea may be a potential best seller, you’ll never know. During this brainstorming session, start taking out a piece of paper and start jotting your ideas down. Remember, no editing. Here are some places you can go to for ideas: Ebay.com Go to Ebay Pulse to take a look at the popular searches. Try to look for smaller searches as you are targeting a niche market, not a broad market. Amazon.com Do a search for the Top Sellers. MySpace.com This is the hottest social network on the net and this is a great way to get niche ideas. Take a look at the various groups on the network. If possible, join them. Article Directories, such as .goarticles.com , .articlecity.com and .buzzle.com Simply pick a category and scroll down the topics. Go to Google Answers (answers.google.com/answers) or Yahoo Answers (answers.yahoo.com) Check out the archives and take a look at the various questions and answers. Go to .magazines.com and browse the topics. It is a good idea to move away from the pc and go to your local magazine store to browse at the various popular topics. You will be surprise some of these topics are still pretty new online. Another alternative is .shopping.com Find It Quick answers.finditquick.com This is similar to Google and Yahoo Answers. Ehow .ehow.com This site has a informative articles on a variety of subjects. This is an excellent source for ideas. Use Overture.com search for these following terms, “tips”, “learn”, “how do I”, “where do I” Elance.com is a popular freelancing site. Take a look at the type of projects bidded. Many marketers hire ghostwriters to write for them. Now, I am not saying that you should steal ideas, but use this as a source of ideas. About.com .about.com Whonu.com .whonu.com This site has a wealth of information. Google Zeitgeist .google.co.uk/press/zeitgeist.html This is another excellent site to keep up to date with the latest trend of searches. You even get to see what countries around the world are searching. Yahoo offers a similar site buzz.yahoo.com/ The resources above are gold mine of profitable ideas. It is entirely up to you to find the gem. With these resources, no more excuses for no ideas! prefecture of dodecanese islands

PREFECTURE OF DODECANESE ISLANDS Tel.: +30 22410 46501-3 Fax: +30 2241046531 e-mail: nomnap.gr Maybe it is rather futile to advise on how to approach these islands, on which would be the fastest or most convenient route. There are many ways - by airplane, by ship, yacht or boat, even by swimming. The best way to discover these islands, however, is the road or history. Then one’s soul becomes one with the Aegean; one does not want to part from these islands and the sea. RHODES: The city of Rhodes, at the north end of the island, presents a dual face. The old town is encircled by medieval castles; there are narrow lanes, stone mansions, churches, the Knights’ Castle, Knights’ Hospital and the Castello. Then the new city extends beyond these suggestive walls - with its wide streets, beautiful buildings, glamorous hotels and shops full of characteristic items of Rhodian folk art. More information about Rhodes island: .toplink.gr/greek/rodos/greece/index.html CHALKI: Chalki looks like a part of Rhodes minus the great current of tourism. A mountainous island, it is ideal or those who wish for peaceful holidays. More information about Chalki island: .toplink.gr/greek/chalki/greece/index.html KOS: This island has given the world Hippocrates, father of medicine; it looks like a huge floating garden. The city is built along a wide bay and catches the eye from the very first moment. There are beautiful beaches and marvellous and often quiet places - all over the island More information about Kos island: .toplink.gr/greek/kos/greece/index.html PATMOS: Called Jerusalem of the Aegean, Patmos is the island of ascetic austerity. It is made or rock and bays and surrounded by seagull islands. Here in a cave St John wrote the Apocalypse - one of the most beautiful texts ever written. More information about Patmos island: .toplink.gr/greek/patmos/greece/index.html KALYMNOS: This island of barren rock, golden beaches and tiny green valleys owes its fame to its celebrated sponge fishers. This is the main profession for men on the island, and the theme for many local dances and folk songs. More information about Kalymnos island: .toplink.gr/greek/kalimnos/greece/index.html SYMI: This is mainly a rocky island, except for its southern part which is covered with pines, mulberries and fruit-bearing trees. We can reach Symi by boat on the route servicing the rest of the Dodecanese, or by using the daily boat service from Rhodes. More information about Symi island: .toplink.gr/greek/simi/greece/index.html KARPATHOS: The island possesses incomparable natural beauties and traditions jealously guarded by its inhabitants. The capital is marked by the peculiar Karpathian houses, built of carved stone, full of embroidery and characteristic interior decorations. the key a fairytale unexpected surprises chapter 12 part 1

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

I was quiet for a moment so that the man, so self-assured and strong willed and not accustomed to acknowledging the need for help, could reflect on his admissions. I then said, “There are some who must move on, and others who are afraid to move, as our attempted escapes enslave us either way. We all become older, and when we do, the amusements of life slowly lose their appeal, and although we think it is merely a matter of finding the right town or the right people, no place or acquaintances can live up to the illusions of our youth. The door to our many escapes then begins to close. When we are children, our minds are fearless and open, allowing us to be completely alive and in each moment without old memories and baggage. We can easily adapt to new situations and diverse friends, but as the years go by, we change in many ways, one of them being an increased discrimination and prejudicial judgment rooted in fear and based on our accumulated experiences. We become set in our habits, and when things don’t go our way, discontent arises. Time also compresses. Ten years in youth will be three years in old age because we have seen, untold times, the things a young person will see for the first time. The journey home is always swifter.” He looked distressed. He didn’t want to hear this but had no choice. Then he said, “Please, I know what you are saying and it is true, but it so difficult to accept.” “Do you wish for me to continue, for what I say you might not be pleasant to your mind?” “Yes,” he said, “of course continue. I’m sorry.” “Seeing new things and having new experiences will always appear to stretch time, this is why we escape into diversity. Sooner or later, however, we can no longer find anything new or interesting, then we come up against what we have been running from our entire lives; our wall of discontent where we realize that there is nothing in this world that we can really count on. Then we finally see the truth, which is emptiness. It is this emptiness that we have been avoiding with our mindless pursuits for so long.” I hesitated to see if he wanted to go on. What I was saying was not very uplifting for anybody who had everything invested in the world and depended on it for his or her happiness. Reality is Reality however, and the way of key seekers is not to manipulate words; they let the chips fall where they may. For those who have made the turn from the world, to key seeking, this Reality is not depressing in the least, quite the contrary; it is a ray of hope. Reality only hurts in the hearts of those caught in the quicksand of the world. The man looked up, saying that for some time, somewhere deep inside, he had actually been aware of the things that I spoke of, but for some reason he continued to search for that perfect situation where everything would be good again. Now he realized what he was looking for did not exist, and what he was finding was just loneliness. “I am grateful,” he said, “that you didn’t give me a typical sermon telling me how wonderful things are and how if I would just keep my mind busy and keep a bright outlook everything would be fine. This is what the priests in the kingdoms told me. They went as far to say that I was too pessimistic and that if I changed my mental attitude my life would continually improve.” “Many people who are ready to embark on the spiritual path are told by uninsightful people that they are too pessimistic,” I answered, “and the fact is, from a worldly point of view, they are unenthusiastic because they have stopped escaping into mental delusion. They begin to understand that anything acquired is easily taken away, and that anything found is easily lost. Therefore, they see quite clearly the danger of relying on the shifting sands of the world for their permanent security. This revelation, however, leaves them in a dilemma, because they do not yet have anything spiritual to fall back on. They only see the emptiness, and being unable to face this emptiness they are never able to see through to the other side. At this time their capacity to be ‘in the moment’ will determine whether they are ready to see, or whether they will remain in the dark.” His hapless eyes indicated that I should go on. “Those still in darkness need help in a different way, because they are too terrified to look at reality. My close proximity to them without troubling their minds and without frightening them with truth is the extent of assistance I can offer. In the mean time, they will still find pleasure in their expectations, but the results of those expectations - the realty at the end of those dreams - will devastate them. Then they will grow old and outlive their fantasies, and having nothing left, will either fall into great depression and anger, or succumb to some weak finality; some belief promoted by this group or that group and never have the satisfaction of knowing Reality for themselves.” “I don’t want this to happen to me, he said. I won’t surrender to that.” “Perhaps you are a warrior,” I said. “At any rate, you are a different case. You have seen the futility of searching for lasting happiness in the world of uncertainty and simply need reassurance regarding your observations. You are actually quite advanced, and really have no alternative but to seek a deeper reality even though you might continue your futile attempts at worldly escapes for some time.” “I am quickly running out of escapes, sir.” “Yes, you are. That is a very perceptive observation, but please understand that kamma does not die readily. Patterns of escape are similar to bad habits or addictions, and are painful to break. We are caught in a bear trap, you see; where it is painful to both remain in the trap or to tear ourselves out. Likewise, it is always your choice whether to linger in your familiar bondage or to risk freedom. From what you are telling me, however, you are able to discern that staying in the old familiar bondage eventually wears thin and comes to a dead-end, so it is painful to continue in the trap. However, tearing out of the trap involves facing the reality of discontent without the luxury of an immediate escape, for freedom requires a change and investigation of the heart, which is extremely painful in the beginning. Whether or not you have the courage to face this depends quite a lot on your experiences in past existences.” “I don’t know how much courage I have,” he confessed. When I feel lonely, I cannot help but look for one relationship after another. It is so terrifying to be alone; so frightening and threatening. Loneliness covers me like a blanket.” “You will never know the limits of your courage until you test it. You are middle aged now, and the rest of your time will go by quickly, not unlike a hazy, repetitive dream. Upon the death of this temporary body, you will find yourself either attached to this transient world, or inclined to give it up and go on. This inclination, one-way or the other will determine your future. If you love life and still believe that the world will satisfy you, then look forward to coming back many times and going through this experience repeatedly.” He looked at the ground considering the reality of going through many more lifetimes, recalling the fear and stress that accompanied this one. “I can tell you these things, but until you feel them in your heart,” I cautioned, “until the pain of this worldly existence makes itself known, you will probably not consider seriously what I tell you. If you do consider what I say, then the way to feel them in your heart is to sit calmly and let the mind relax from its desperate escapes. Face your discontent and the reality of emptiness. The inner work will cut through much of your confusion quickly, but very few have the courage or will take the time to see the significance of this sitting in silence. Appearances can be deceiving; a key seeker sitting in the forest looks to be asleep with nothing happening, but in truth, everything is happening. It is just occurring at very deep levels and not apparent to an unrefined mind. It is interesting that the more familiar we become with this inner work, the more interesting it becomes, but the more familiar we become with the world, the more contemptible it becomes. “I must go now, but let me assure you that if you ever feel inclined to begin this inner work, sincere effort will bring results in many ways. You will find yourself being less confused and angry. Your attitude toward others will be more cooperative and less competitive, and your inclination to attach and cling to harmful things will decrease, while there will be less aversion and a natural openness toward inspiring things. Desires will be less lustful, and you will be less conceited. You will become less cynical and skeptical as your concerns of being lied to disappear, simply because you will see through each lie, leaving you with a feeling of compassion for those who are so confused, insecure, and fearful that they are forced into falsehood. Your restlessness and sadness will subside as energy levels increase, and as you become more sensitive to unkind acts, you will know the far-reaching results of those actions, and how they affect you, as well as everybody you touch. The worries over your failures in the world and concerns over such things as your death or the death of family and friends will become less of a burden, and your sorrow will diminish appreciably. Physical and mental pain will largely cease, as you will become familiar with the common characteristics of existence; impermanence, discontent and no self.” His eyes revealed an intense interest as if he had a momentary insight, but then he admitted that he wasn’t sure if he had the courage to change his course in life at this late date. “Only your heart can tell you whether or not you are ready for this inner work,” I said, “so listen carefully to your heart for it is a still, quiet voice.” This was more than enough for him to think about, so I bowed, indicating the conversation was over. He was on his way to the truth and I silently wished him complete happiness in his quest, as he slowly walked away pondering his future. (To be continued) (hr) E. college essays youre never too old to proofread

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Proofreading is an essential part to your writing experience, and writing well-received college essays is a central part to your future career opportunities. For this reason there are several basic concepts that you should keep in mind when proofreading your essays. Well knowing these basic concepts make you the next great American writer, probably not, but they will allow you to change a C into a B, due to poor proofreading skills. The basic concepts are broken down into things that you can do before you proofread as well as what you should look for when you are actually proofreading your essay. And finally, what can you do when you’re just not happy with that B and would like to turn it into an A. Prior to sitting down to proofread your document and discover and correct the minor issues, you should first ensure that your document is correct on the major levels such as the focus, format, paragraph structure and length. Once you have verified that your paper is correct at the macro level, it is time to delve deeper into your essay. One way of using a little detective work is to look at submitted papers that have been returned and can provide a list of mistakes that you have committed previously. Use these mistakes as a guideline and examine your college essays for the same type of mistakes and correct them. This will give you a head start on finding common errors that you are prone to make. Now that you’re ready to proofread your document, don’t. Take a short break from examining the document as this allows you to distance yourself from the work and give you a bit of detachment from your text. Working and reworking the same paragraphs can often lead to missing common errors as your mind corrects incorrect sentence structure. Once you’ve taken a bit of a break you should read your college essays out loud. This allows you to actually hear the text and is excellent for detecting run-on sentences. If you are using computer word processing software, there are tools available for spellchecking as well as grammar checking. These can be used to give you a head start correcting the errors that the software can detect. Note however, a spellchecker will only check for misspelled words. Incorrect words that are spelled correctly will not be flagged as errors. So you spend all your time proofreading your document and submitted it only to be disappointed by a B for what you consider to be an effort. What can you do? You should learn more about the subtleties of the English language and how to make grammar work for you. At many colleges around the country there are writing centers which allow students to learn more about grammar rules and writing. These classes are an excellent opportunity for a student to increase their writing skills and reduce the amount of time that they spend rewriting and correcting grammatical errors on their college essays. If additional grammar classes are not available, there are a number of handbooks and texts on the correct use of grammar. These handbooks usually include a number of examples that illustrate common mistakes that can occur. Wade Knoxvilleessays

songwriting courses review of reo rafting songwriting retreats

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

In the past 6 years I’ve attended 10 major workshops with pro songwriters. Including 4 by NASI in Nashville and 5 at TAXI. I’ve attended 5 songwriting retreats at REO and 2 of Pat Pattison’s Berklee College online courses. Everyone was worth it. REO Rafting’s setting is unique white water wilderness and incomparable to the setting of any songwriting course. The instructors at REO are world class in skill, experience and successful at writing and performing. The food is terrific and the staff is helpful and friendly. REO has wireless internet, so if you have a lap top bring it along. The camp is 14 miles from town so no one bothers you. There is limited telephone use and no cell phone service. Lodging is basic as it is large canvas tents on wood platforms. They are dry and deluxe as you are going to find in any tent. There are a couple of cabins which also are very good. The shower facility is new and very good. There’s lots of hot water. The camp is on a generator and you need to bring a flashlight to get from the main area to your tent after dark. The camp is right beside the white water river. There’s a swimming hole near by. The water is chilly but very swim-able. Bring any alcohol in with you as it’s a half hour to town. There is a happy hour in the evening. It’s a dry hot climate and there’s no air conditioning. The nights cool down so bring a fleece or sweater. The stars are crystal clear at night and great for star watching. There’s a large hot tub. The white water rafting trips are spectacular. The workshops are geared for all levels of songwriters. The instructors try to make the lessons as productive as possible. I thing I find interesting is that each year the instruction takes me to a new level of understanding as my knowledge and experience increase. The other amazing thing is there are some very accomplished singer-songwriters and some just starting out. There are 4 instructors and about 35 students in an intimate setting so you eat, drink and study with the instructors. It wonderful to be able to approach your instructors are talk with them as you all eat and hang out together. You get a one on one tutoring scheduled but there is plenty of other times to talk about any songwriting issue you wish. There also are music shows and jams every night with instructor performances. That part alone is work the trip. There’s a PA system and Keyboards. Last year we had a 3 hour Beatles jam that was the best jam I’ve ever been at in my life. All the instructors sang with us. There’s are co-writing sessions each year. A song that Bryan Fogelman and I co-write is receiving internet airtime. Recently “The Mayor” at .alwayscountry.net internet radio started playing that song “Tick Tock Of The Rocking Chair”. I teamed up with two men last year. It was the most fun I’ve had co-writing and we produced a very funny country song. I went to both REO workshops last year and will go to both this year. They’re very worthwhile with very little duplication. How Music Really Works

article writing churning out good quality articles as fast as they are demanded

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Writing down your thoughts is an easy task but making them appealing to the readers is difficult. When you write an article, you sit on chair of an expert. People read your thoughts as if you have a thorough knowledge of the topic you are dealing within your article. So writing an article puts whole lot of responsibility on your shoulders, the responsibility of being true and genuine. If you want to have panache in your writing, there are certain points that you should keep in mind. These are certain basics of article writing. In this day and age, competition is fierce when it comes to article writing on the Net. One of the most important elements of successful article writing today is to be able to produce high quality articles fast. There is a method that you can use in order to write an article fast. The ultimate key to writing an article fast is to understand your topic. There is an old mantra in writing that you should only write of those things of which you have actual knowledge. Start writing about something you are familiar with. After that before you begin writing any article, you need to make sure that you educate yourself on the subject. In addition, when it comes to the easiest way to write an article fast you need to understand that fast article writing takes practice. Therefore, you need to “workout,” you need to write regularly. Many professional writers recommend that you write each and every day. You need to schedule a regular time to write … even if you do not have an active project in production. By following this course, you will become a better and faster writer in no time. The basic of article writing is that the articles you write should be well organized. This means that the article should have an introduction to the topic, which introduces the readers to the topic followed by paragraphs that deal with the topic, and a conclusion to the topic. Using the above format gives the readers a chance to understand your article better and you will be able to convey your message properly to the readers. Finally, when it comes to the easiest way to write an article fast, remember the principle of keeping it simple. You do not have to write a complicated article. People like to read articles that are easy to understand. Therefore, you do not need to litter your writing with unnecessary fancy words. Keep it simple and you will keep it easy. a review of arthur and george by julian barnes

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

George Edalji (that’s Ay-dal-ji, by the way, since Parsee names are always stressed on the first syllable) is the son of a Staffordshire vicar of Indian origin and his Scottish wife. George is thus a half-caste, to use the language of his late-Victorian and Edwardian age. He’s a diligent, if not too distinguished a scholar. He is uninterested in sport, is of small stature and doesn’t see too well. He sleeps with his father behind a locked door, is in bed by 9:30, becomes a small town solicitor who develops an interest in train timetables and, by way of outlandish diversion, publishes a traveller’s guide to railway law. Arthur Conan Doyle (later Sir Arthur) is born in Edinburgh, completes medical school and generally accomplishes whatever task he sets himself, including becoming a world famous writer. Despite the fact that he kills off his creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, ostensibly to devote time to tasks of greater gravity, popular demand insists that he raise the character from the dead. He does this and proceeds to generate even greater success than before. He marries happily twice and pursues and interest in spiritualism, amongst other good causes. Perhaps because of who they are, the Edalji family become the butt of the campaign of poison pen letters. When they complain, all they accomplish is the focusing of further unwanted attentions on themselves. When a series of ripping attacks on animals remains unsolved, George, somehow, becomes the prime suspect. Convinced of his villainy, police, judicial system, expert witnesses, jury and press see him convicted of the crime and sent down for seven years. Good conduct sees him released after three. Sir Arthur wishes to do good and takes up George Edalji’s case. He researches the facts, analyses the possibilities, tracks down neighbours and officials who have been involved. He creates an alternative explanation of events and presents it to officialdom, seeking a pardon and compensation for George, who by this time has transferred to London to start a new life. The two men meet and the incongruity of their assumed expectations of life are as irreconcilable as they are irrelevant to their joint focus on George’s case. After official review, however, the Home Office Committee eventually concludes in an ambiguous manner. Edalji was convicted of the crime and the conviction is declared unsound; but crucially he is not declared innocent. He is therefore found not guilty but then not innocent either and so not worthy of compensation. When, years later, Sir Arthur dies and his associates stage a spiritualist gathering in his honour in the Royal Albert Hall, George is invited and attends, complete with binoculars lest he miss a detail of the proceedings. The illusion of the event draws him in and at one stage he feels himself to be the centre of attention, only to find that it is a near miss. Most of the detail refers to himself and his father, but the reality then points to another who is immediately identified. But, paradoxically, the quiet George Edalji and his Parsee (not Hindoo) father, Shapurji, were always the centre of attention simply by being who they were. Even Sir Arthur, the son’s eventual champion, states this in one of his letters when he writes that it was perhaps inevitable that a dark-skinned clergyman taking a station in central England would attracts other’s attention of a kind that would seek to undermine him, vilify him and attempt to oust him. The message is clear, that to be different from an assumed norm is to invite hatred, envy, discrimination and eventually ignominy. It is presented as a universal assumption, an unwritten element of universal common sense. Thus, as an intruder, the usual rules of justice will never pertain, a reality alluded to late in the book when George, scanning the Albert Memorial with his binoculars, discovers a statuesque embodiment of the concept of justice that is not wearing a blindfold. What is eventually so disturbing about Arthur and George, however, is the realisation that both characters are outsiders. George is set apart from his Staffordshire peers by his skin colour and perceived race. Arthur, however, lives no humdrum life. He attends private schools, qualifies as a doctor and then becomes an international celebrity by virtue of his writing. He takes up minority causes and identifies with them but, despite his obvious separateness from mainstream society, in his case his position is never interpreted as a threat or a handicap, obviously because the separateness of privilege has a different currency from the separateness of even relative poverty. Now an enduring memory of my own school history lessons was a textbook reproduction of a mid-Victorian cartoon of the universal pyramid of creation. It had God at the apex, immediately in touch via the saints with the Empress of India and then, layered beneath in widening courses were the gentry and aristocracy, the members of government and civil service, the professional classes and merchants. The working classes could perhaps temporarily ignore their poverty in the solace offered by knowing that they are a cut above members of all other races who, themselves, were just one up from the apes. It was not many more layers down to the low animals, most of which slithered or crawled. Arthur and George ostensibly tells us much about racism and racial discrimination in a society that was portrayed as the apex of a worldwide empire, a heavenly focus for aspiration. It also tells us about the power of presumption and has much to say very quietly and by suggestion about social class and its ability, especially in Britain, to legitimise difference as originality or eccentricity in some areas, differences which elsewhere would be threats.

three ways journaling can boost your creativity and your business

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I have a friend who has struggled with her creativity for a long time. She’s extremely uncomfortable thinking of herself as “creative.” We’ve been working together on it, and making progress. One of the tools that’s really helped her has been journaling. From Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way to Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones to Linda Trichter Metcalf, Ph.D. and Tobin Simon, Ph.D.’s Writing the Mind Alive to numerous other publications, journaling has enjoyed a long history of creative-nurturing along with a host of other benefits. For my purposes, I’m defining journaling as any sort of loose, longhand writing. Whatever thoughts come into your head you put them down on paper. There’s no structure, no form, nor concern about spelling or grammar or even legibility. Even if writing isn’t your dream, incorporating a regular program of journaling into your life is a wonderful way to jump-start your creativity and cultivate a constant flow of new ideas. Here are three reasons why. 1. Helps you get rid of the junk in your head. We all have it. Junk thoughts. Everything from self-defeating comments (”Oh, I’ll never be good at that.” or “Who told you that you could be a writer?”) to the “worry of the moment” to neurosis of every type to the ever-growing, constant to-do lists. Who can be creative with all that noise going on? For that matter, who could even hear a creative thought over all that racket? Journaling is a way to quiet the mind. Writing all that junk down transfers it from your head to the paper. Suddenly, you find you can actually think rather than simply react. The best part is this quiet lasts long after the journaling is done for the day. And if you journal frequently, then the effect is cumulative. When I finish journaling, I find that I feel peaceful. Calm. Able to focus. The junk is gone, leaving space to be creative. 2. Gives you a chance to try new ideas. What better way to see if a new idea will work than to try it out on paper? You can write out the pros and cons, describe a scenario, play “what if” games (”What if my new business was successful?” “What if I tried that new advertising campaign?” “What if I contacted the editor at Money Magazine?”). And the best part is it’s all in a private little notebook that no one will ever have to see. Try writing down your hopes, dreams, goals, visions. Play around with them. You may find as you journal about them, a strategy for making them come true suddenly presents itself, right there in the pages of your notebook. 3. Helps you build a bridge to your muse. This one really only kicks in after you’ve sufficiently done number one (at least, this is the way it works for me). It seems only after I’ve gotten most of the junk out of my head that the muse sometimes slips out to play a bit. How do you know the muse came to visit you? When that brilliant idea flashes in your head. It may not happen while you’re journaling, but instead while you’re showering, walking, driving or something else. This is the muse talking to you. It’s important to remember muses have quiet voices. They can easily be drowned out by the incessant bickering of the other noisy chatter going on in your head. Once you can get those other voices to shut up, you can start to listen for the muse. Don’t worry if this doesn’t happen right away. There have been weeks and even months when I write nothing but junk down. But then, one day, that great idea appears on the paper or in my head as I’m walking my dogs. And when that happens, I know all the time I spent journaling about nothing has paid off. Creativity Exercises — Journal more ideas I would love it if you made a pact with yourself to journal regularly for a month. If that’s too much of a commitment for you, try it as a creativity exercise. Write down your challenge at the top of a piece of paper. Maybe it’s ways to increase business or promote your products more or a new PR campaign. Now just start writing about it. Don’t think, just write. Fill a few pages of musing about that particular challenge. Don’t type it either — write longhand. If you wander away from it, try nudging yourself back. Write for at least 20 minutes. If no answer presents itself in that time, don’t get too hung up about it. Try it again the next day or a few days in a row. Sometimes it just takes awhile to jar things loose. And remember, great ideas have a tendency to pop up in the most unexpected places, not just when you’re doing something “creative.” Michele Pariza Wacek is the author of “Got Ideas? writing and publishing in a changing climate

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

A few years ago, I worked for a specialist Africa news publishing house and encountered for the first time in my journalistic career the phenomenon of publishing expert articles written by non-journalists. The idea of making a publication the centerpiece of a number of a number of readers that had an interest in knowing what their competitors were thinking, doing and who they were talking to was quite new to me. But it was an interesting experience, which set the scene for developments I later witnessed in an online environment. For once, I was not trying my hardest at finding stories, angles and wrangling myself in godknows what positions to get to the hot stuff
